A London Mews is my preferred address

I adore the Mews in London, those little streets between larger streets where the horses for nearby grand homes were stabled. Here is an entry via an arch. I actually found a mews where there are ‘well shoed’ horses in one end but most of the old stables today are private residences for the two footed ‘well shoed’.

Even the original cobblestones are still there and most are converted to stylish homes that boast pretty front gardens achieved mostly with potted plants.

This house has an outdoor table left out permanently such is the informality and cosy nature of living in this mews. We saw barbecues and childrens bicycles and other play equipment left out without regard to theft, they just must feel like they are living in a small village here.

This house has a well established vine growing over the house from just a crack in the cobblestones.

A mews house is ideal for someone running a business from their home. The businesses I saw were of the creative type, internet designers, graphic designers etc. This house has covered the entry to the old stable with pot plants. Some homeowners have used the stable to house their cars, whereas this one is using the old stable to add to the interior living space.

The cost of these homes are astronomical now. Even in the days when I lived in London in the early seventies it would have been beyond my means to buy one with the pathetic wages I was on at that time working for a solicitor as his secretary and general dogsbody.

So in my next life I want to live in a London mews.Roz

    Hi John and Roz,
Thanks for your ongoing travelogue. I was not aware of the current use of these old stables and certainly something for Jacinta and I to visit on our next trip to London. Please keep them coming and enjoy the rest of your trip while we continue to sink in our political farce.
    Regards Ron and Jacinta
